Ex-nun, writer, musician, singer, and creator of handmade nun dolls Alice Loweecey will be at the East Greenbush Community Library on Sat., Oct. 20 at 2:00. She’ll discuss her mystery series and its protagonist Giulia Falcone, a former nun who finds her true calling in private investigation.

The books present a vivid picture of life in the convent, as well as after “jumping the wall,” because of Loweecey’s experiences as a former nun. Giulia’s experiences with boss/partner Frank Driscoll are pure fiction, however.

“The convent is still seen as a hidden, mysterious place, and people want to know what goes on inside its walls,” Loweecey says. “My sleuth wasn’t afraid of tough situations while in the habit, and she tackles some gritty, real-life situations on the outside as well. Of course, learning how put on makeup, walk in heels and even go on a date present their own challenges.”

The Upper Hudson Chapter of Sisters in Crime is hosting Loweecey, who is from the Buffalo area, as part of their mission to focus attention on women in crime fiction.

“We obviously want to support the work of our local members, but also put other Sisters in Crime writers in the spotlight. There are some great books being published that get lost in the glare of the focus on blockbuster hit books,” says Kay Hafner, the chapter president.
