World-Building for Mystery Writers
October 18 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Two-time Agatha Award-nominated author Mally Becker will share “lessons learned” to help writers build their characters’ fictional world. Whether you write cozies, Neo-noir mysteries, or anything in between, you’ll need to get the facts right to maintain your story’s illusion of reality. How can you balance research with strong storytelling? Where do you find sources to pull a reader into your fictional world? How can you approach experts who’ll add more “truth-i-ness” to your fiction? And is it ever fair to bend the truth?
Mally Becker is the two-time Agatha Award-nominated author of the Revolutionary War mysteries, which include The Turncoat’s Widow, The Counterfeit Wife, and, most recently, The Paris Mistress. You can find Mally at home writing, teaching mystery writing at The Writers Circle Workshops, or interviewing authors for the Historical Novel Society’s website. Mally was an attorney and volunteer advocate for foster children before becoming a full-time writer. She and her husband met while sailing, and they purchased an old boat together before ever buying a house. They live in New Jersey, where they raised their wonderful son.
