Women in the Sherlock Holmes Stories with Jeff Bradway

The Sherlock Holmes stories are “adventures,” and adventures need heroes, comrades, villains, and, oftentimes, someone in need of rescue. Given the Victorian background of the tales, it is not surprising that the world of Sherlock Holmes stories is largely a man’s world. That said, there are many significant women in the Canon, who are neither mere window-dressing, nor damsels in distress. Whether clients, associates, antagonists, or free agents, these women more than hold their own among the myriad characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Jeffry BradwayJeff Bradway is a former history instructor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, and Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury, Connecticut. He is currently a member of the Pittsfield Historical Commission, a director of the Pittsfield Cemetery and Crematory, and president of the Board of Trustees of the Berkshire Music School. Jeff has authored numerous papers on medieval history and has written and lectured on local history, Edgar Allan Poe, and, of course, Sherlock Holmes. He belongs to numerous Sherlockian societies, among them the Baker Street Breakfast Club, the Men on the Tor, the Three Garridebs, the Speckled Band, and the Baker Street Irregulars. He edits “Groans, Cries, and Bleatings,” a quarterly newsletter for the Baker Street Breakfast Club and has contributed to The Baker Street Journal and other Sherlockian publications.
