The Ins and Outs of Indie Publishing

February 15 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

Have you ever wondered what’s involved in self-publishing your work? Have you ever considered doing it yourself? Three Upper Hudson SinC members who took the plunge will share their experiences in the “wild” world of self-publishing. Upper Hudson SinC members Syrl Kazlo, Jacqueline Boulden, and Nina Pietrafesa will discuss why they decided to make the move, some of the responsibilities involved, and the pros and cons of self-publishing versus traditional publishing. Join us for what is sure to be a fascinating and informative program.

Attendees will be entered into a raffle of the authors’ signed books.

Moderator: Ellen Higgins, Author, Writing Instructor, and Language and Literature Scholar.

Jacqueline Boulden is a multi-award-winning author of suspense and mystery. Her Past Can’t Wait, a psychological thriller, is about resilient women fighting back, protecting each other, and healing. Her second novel, Family Ties Family Lies, is a small town mystery set in upstate New York. It’s about woman who returns to her small town to care for her ailing mother and discovers a web of secrets her late father left behind. A Journalism and Public Relations graduate of Utica University, she’s won Emmy awards for her TV news reporting and Telly awards for writing and producing educational and documentary videos. Jacqueline made several career moves around the country covering politics in Washington, D.C., NASA and the space shuttle program in Florida (including the Challenger accident), and fighting the wind for control of her hats during live shots in hurricanes and blizzards while working in Orlando and Philadelphia. Jacqueline lives in upstate New York with her spouse and their rescue dog, who’s teaching them how to speak Beaglish. When not writing, she can be found wandering the garden, taking photos of the dog, or reading, reading, reading.

“I decided to publish independently under my imprint, Pine Place Press, because I struggled to find an agent and didn’t want to wait forever to see my stories in print. I think the keys to successful independent publishing are to hire the best people you can: a book cover designer; developmental editor; copy editor; and a proofreader or two. My novels have won six awards and been finalists in more than half a dozen other awards. If you publish independently, you have to be willing to invest the time and money to produce the best books you can.”

An aspiring cozy mystery writer, Nina Pietrafesa, writing as Christie Logan, is a published romance author, who crafts sweet romance straight from the heart. She lives in upstate New York with too many pets, too many dust bunnies lurking under the bed, and too many plot bunnies bouncing around in her head. She thinks everyone deserves a happy ending and, in her books, everyone gets one. When she’s not writing, she’s watching old movies, hanging out with her dog, and trying to thwart her cats’ plans to take over the world. She’s also working on her first cozy mystery.

“When my small publisher closed its doors some years ago and I got my rights back, I decided to give self-publishing a try. It was mighty scary at first, but I took my time and got the hang of it. Self-publishing has given me a lot more freedom and control—and frankly, more money. There’s a lot more help available nowadays for authors who want to do it on their own.”

S.A. Kazlo, a retired teacher, lives in upstate New York with her husband and two lively dachshunds. She writes the Samantha Davies Mystery series, featuring Samantha Davies and her loveable dachshund, Porkchop. When not writing she is busy hooking, rug hooking that is, and enjoying her family.

“I went through Draft2Digital to self-publish a mid-grade novel I’d written to see if I could really do it. I found them very easy to navigate and was pleased with the end product. While I’ll always be thankful for what the publisher of the first 6 books in my Samantha Davies Mystery series has done for me, now that I’m on my own, I feel relief. No deadlines to make and no issues with what I want in the book. It’s mine, all the bumps and warts. With any publisher, unless you’re a big name, you do all the marketing. I feel I can do that and get more of the royalty pie.”
