Nineteenth-Century Crime Scenes and their Forensics

September 19 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

In the 1800s, forensics and policing were in their infancy. How do you leave a trail of physical evidence for your detective when nothing seems available? There’s more than you think. In this presentation I talk about what evidence existed, how a crime scene could be processed, and teach you how to tweak fact to create intriguing fiction.

K.K. Cathers runs the website A Curiosity of Crime, a research resource for authors of nineteenth-century detective fiction. She published the first book in a research series, A Writer’s Guide to Nineteenth-Century Murder by Arsenic. She teaches forensics and nineteenth-century crime and law enforcement to help authors craft intriguing fiction. She presented at the Historical Novel Society North America’s conference in 2023 and has given seminars for various Sisters in Crime chapters, Mystery Writers of America, and Kiss of Death’s COFFIN series.
