Common Mistakes Writers Make About the Law

October 17 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Getting the facts right matters, even in fiction. This presentation will identify common mistakes fiction writers make about the law and how to avoid them, provide a few research tools, and include time for Q&A. The presenter is an award-winning mystery writer and lawyer with more than 40 years of experience.

Leslie BudewitzLeslie Budewitz writes the Spice Shop mysteries set in Seattle’s Pike Place Market; the Food Lovers’ Village mysteries, set in NW Montana; and historical short mysteries. As Alicia Beckman, she writes moody suspense. Her latest books are Lavender Lies Bleeding and All God’s Sparrows and Other Stories: A Stagecoach Mary Fields Collection.

A graduate of Notre Dame Law School, Leslie practiced law in Washington and Montana for 40 years. Her guide for writers, Books, Crooks and Counselors: How to Write Accurately About Criminal Law and Courtroom Procedure, won the 2011 Agatha Award for Best Nonfiction—the first of three Agathas. Her work has also won or been nominated for Derringer, Anthony, Macavity, Spur, and High Plains book awards. A former president of Sisters in Crime, Leslie love to eat, cook, read, hike, and travel, not necessarily in that order. She lives in NW Montana.
