Adding a Touch of Gothic to Your Story

March 21 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

From the classic characters to the eerie locations to the evocative atmosphere, the Gothic genre has been gripping readers since the 1760s. Its popularity is certainly booming today. Can you enrich your stories with Gothic elements like blurring the line between external threats and psychological terror, and the idea that past sins, secrets, or generational trauma inevitably resurface to haunt the current characters? Nancy Bilyeau, award-winning author of historical mysteries and ‘The Heiress of Northanger Abbey’, shares some insights and pointers that will let you “lean into the Gothic” no matter what type of mysteries you write.

Nancy BilyeauNancy Bilyeau is the author of eight published novels of historical suspense and is writing her ninth. She wrote the Joanna Stafford trilogy, a trio of thrillers set in Henry VIII’s England, for Touchstone/Simon & Schuster. Nancy’s fourth novel is titled ‘The Blue’, an 18th-century spy thriller revolving around the art & porcelain world. Her main character is Genevieve Planche, a French Huguenot refugee, which draws on Nancy’s  background. Nancy is descended from Pierre Billiou, who immigrated to New Amsterdam (now New York City) in the 1660s. ‘The Blue’ launched a new series, with ‘The Fugitive Colours’ as the second book and ‘The Versailles Formula’ as the third. She also writes fiction set in early New York City: ‘Dreamland,’ set in Coney Island in 1911, and ‘The Orchid Hour,’ set in Prohibition-era NYC. A former staff editor at ‘Rolling Stone,’ ‘Entertainment Weekly,’ and ‘InStyle,’ Nancy now contributes to ‘Town & Country’ magazine. She wrote ‘The Heiress of Northanger Abbey’, a sequel to the Jane Austen classic, for Muse Books.
